We had Yai, Pa Nok and P Monet in house for weeks and the big Thai family in one small house does affect the boys's family tree concept. Let's see...

There are 2 mama, 3 "Mae" (mother=แม่): Mama is a Mama, Pa Nok is a Mama for P Monet, then Yai, Pa Nok, and Mama is "Mae" (แม่) for different persons!!

First, Mama is Mama for the boys but Mama is "Na Nam" (Aunty Nam) for Monet and the same Mama is "Nam" for Papa, Yai, and Pa Nok.

Then, Pa Nok is Mama for Monet but she is also "Pa Nok" for the boys, she is "Pii Nok" for Mama (older sister), and she is "Nok" for Yai and Papa.

Then, Yai is Yai for all the boys (this is easy!), but she is "Mae" (mother=แม่) for Mama and Pa Nok and "Khun Mae" for Papa.

Now, Papa is Papa for the boys, also he is "Na Rieko" for Monet and he is "Rieko" for Yai and Pa Nok.

Mama even has an headache describing this relations..imagine how the boys wil be...let's see the results.

One day, Monet needed some help in the shower. He shout "Mama Pii Nok, Help!!!"(Here he has got the point, to specify whom he needed to come and help coz if he only shout "Mama"..who knows who is coming!!).

Another day, Mama got home and asked Marco who went to picked him up from the kindergarten today. Marco replied "Pii Nok went to pick me up". (So now Pa Nok is Marco's older sister!!).

One other day, after playing together with Marco and Rieko, Monet changed his relationship with Rieko by calling him "Papa Rieko" (Marco called Rieko papa all the time..so Monet decide to do the same while he already has his own Papa..so this one is "Papa Rieko". He may think "Papa" means a man!!)

Roy is the only one who has got teh family tree concept correctly. He calls everyone with correct relationship. Yai is Yai (his favourite..calling her more than 20 times a day even when he sits on her lap!). Marco is Marco or "Pii". Monet is Monet (he can say it correctly better than when Monet called himself when he was at Roy's age!). Mama is Mama but sometimes he calls Mama by name loudly "Nam"...and Papa is Papa but lately he also knows that his papa is "Rieko". So, he calls Papa by name often as well.

It is already complicated enough for them to know things in 2-3 languages..but the family tree is difficult. Mama still doesn't understand the Chinese family tree when mama's friends are tellign about their family or even Dutch family is mroe complicated than Mama thought. Let's see when the boys go to Thailand the end of this year..anothe rfamily tree story to tell, may be!!

a Thai joke - เรื่องของท่านขุน

My apologize to the international readers for this story. It is exclusive for Thai readers as it really can nto be translted into English and have the same sense of humor.

ที่บ้านแม่มาเป็นบ้านศักดินา (ยายมีที่นาเยอะนะเออ จะบอกให้) และมีท่านขุนอยู่สองคน ท่านขุนพี่น้องสองศรีนี้ ได้รับบรรดาศักดิ์พระราชทานจากยาย จากวีรกรรมประจำวันที่ทำให้ยายและแม่มาทั้งปวดหัว และขำขันในแต่ละวัน

ท่านขุนคนพี่ได้รับบรรดาศักดิ์เป็น "ขุนพิเรนทรเทพ" เนื่องจาก ท่านขุนพิเรนทรฯ (นามเดิม ด.ช. เป็นไทย โคตรสาร) นั้น วันๆ เอาแต่สรรหากิจกรรมอันน่าหวาดเสียว ชวนปวดหัวเวียนเกล้าให้ยายและแม่มาหัวใจหล่นไปอยู่ที่ตาตุ่มวันละหลายหน วีรกรรมของท่านนั้น ไม่สามารถยกมาพรรณนาได้หมดภายใน blog หน้าเดียว แต่พอยกตัวอย่างให้เห็นภาพตามได้ อาทิ เอาหมอนอิงมาต่อกันสูง วางบนโซฟา แล้วปีนขึ้นไปเหยียบและจะกระโดดลงมาเป็น spiderman หรือ หากท่านขุนอยากได้ของในที่สูง ก็ไม่ได้ไปเอาเก้าอี้มาปีน หากแต่ท่านไปเอารถที่ขี่เล่นมายืนเหยียบขึ้นเอาของ (ลองนึกภาพดูว่าถ้าล้อรถมันลื่นเวลาขึ้นไปยืน) หรือ การลองปีนขึ้นไปยืนบนม้าโยกแล้วยืนขาเดียว (บอกว่าอยากลองเป็นนกฟลามิงโกดู) หรือ แกว่งแขนไปมาทำท่าเป็นงวงช้าง และพอแม่มาเอาน้ำมาให้ดื่ม ก็จะเอาทั้งมือลงไปล้วงน้ำในแก้วมากินให้เหมือนช้างที่กินน้ำด้วยงวง หรือ พยายามที่จะกระโดดลงมาจากกระดานลื่นโดยไม่ไถลลื่นลงมาตามปกติ เป็นต้น

วีรกรรมของท่านขุนผู้พี่นี้ มีได้ไม่ซ้ำในแต่ละวัน เล่นเอายายและแม่มาได้บริหารหัวใจ (เลือดสูบฉีด) และกล่องเสียงเป็นระยะๆ นับว่าท่านมีความคิดสร้างสรรค์มิใช่น้อย ที่จะคิดทำอะไรแปลกๆ ได้ทุกวัน ระยะหลังมานี้ ท่านขุนได้หลงใหลในการผลิตงานศิลปะ วาดภาพ วีรกรรมก็มีน้อยลงไปบ้าง เฮ้อ

ส่วนท่านขุนผู้น้องนั้น ได้รับบรรดาศักดิ์จากยายให้เป็น ขุนพลอยพยัก (นามเดิม ด.ช.รอยไทย โคตรสาร) ท่านขุนผู้น้องนี้ อายุยังน้อย จึงมีวีรกรรมในอีกแบบหนึ่ง คือ ท่านขุนพลอยฯ นั้น ลอกเลียนแบบท่านขุนผู้พี่ทุกอย่างเท่าที่จะทำได้ หากขุนพี่ร้องไห้ เนื่องจากหกล้ม หรืออะไรก็ตาม ท่านขุนพลอยฯ ท่านจะร้องตามในทันใดโดยไม่สนว่าสาเหตุใด และเอาให้เหมือน แม้ว่าจะเห็นได้ชัดว่า แกล้งร้องแบบไม่มีน้ำตาชัดๆ ก็ตาม และก็อีกหากขุนพี่ หัวเราะขุนน้องก็หัวเราะตาม โดยไม่รู้สาเหตุใดๆ เหมือนกัน ที่หนักไปกว่านั้น คือการเลียนแบบนี้ ไม่มีขอบเขต หรือเหตุผล ฉะนั้น เมื่อขุนพี่วิ่งหกล้มขุนน้องก็ทำท่าวิ่งแล้วหกล้มตามเหมือนกัน และในบางครั้งท่านขุนผู้น้องนี้ก็เลียนแบบขุนพี่โดยไม่คำนึงถึงข้อจำกัดทางกายภาพใดๆ เห็นพี่ปีนเข้าอ่างอาบน้ำได้ หรือ ปีนขึ้นไปนั่งบนพนักโซฟาได้ ทาขุนขาสั้นคนนี้ก็บ่ยั่น พยายามพาดขาอันสั้นๆของตนตามเขาไปให้ได้ เมื่อทำไม่ได้ก็ร้องลั่น ให้แม่มาหรือยายมาช่วย นอกจากนี้ ยังรวมถึงการลอกเลียนคำพูดและการร้องเพลงของขุนพี่อีกด้วย

To my lovely 3 guys

These latest few weeks are the hardest and heaviest weeks of Mama's school life ever. Having a family with little kids make it heavier for Mama. But all the support Mama gets from Papa and the boys (that they are so sweet and easy with Yai and Papa and accept that Mama has less time for them). This give mama extra energy to work hard and try to finsh the thesis as soon as possible. Here you are my three gentlemen (though two of them are still little!!)..the song from mama's heart.

a 3-year-old boy's story

One winter day, it was snowing. The boys were very excited. Marco started his lecture for Mama and Roy.

Marco: Mama, snow is sneeuw. (sneeuw= Ducth word for snow)

Mama: Ja. เก่งมาก (very good)

Marco: Snow is niet blauw, Mama. Sneeuw is wit. (Mama, snow is not blue, snow is white)

Roy: no no (I think he means snow as he was pointing out to outside)

The teacher at school told mama that she also got a lecture from Marco as well.

Marco: Marco vindt pataat lekker. (Marco likes to eat frenchfries)

Teacher: ja, OK.

Marco: Konijn vindt pataat ook lekker. (Rabbit also likes to eat frenchfries)

Teacher: oh..ja??

Marco: en konijn eet ook graag wortels en slabladjes. (and rabbit also likes to eat carrots and lettuce leaves)

Teacher: oh, dat is heel gezond. (that is very healthy)

Marco: en weet je? kuiken zit in een ei. (and you know what? a chick is in the egg).

Teacher: ja..goed zo. (yes, very good)

Marco: Marco is op het strand geweest in Thailand en Marco heeft gezwommen in de zee. (Marco went to the beach in Thailand and Marco swam in the see)

Teacher: dat is mooi (that's nice)

Marco: Marco heeft een orangje vis gezien. (Marco saw an orange fish as well)

Teacher: Leuk. (nice)

Marco: Ik ga spelen, dag. (I am going to play, bye)

Teacher: Oh..OK..!!???!! (end of the lecture phewwwwwww)

There were 4 turtles in the picture and Marco was looking at it and said..

Marco: Mama, dit is een papa schilpad. (Mama, this is a papa turtle)

Mama: OK

Marco: Dit is een baby schilpad, dit is een mama schilpad en dit is een Marco schilpad.

(This is a baby turtle, this is a mama turtle, and this is a marco turtle= a big brother turtle)

Mama: ja..nice

Marco: Mama, maar waar is Yai schilpad dan? (Mama, but where is Yai turtle)

Mama: oh, that's true. Yai schilpad อยู่บนบ้านลูก (Yai turtle is upstair)

So, he knows the concept of family member very well and well enough not forget to include his grandma. เก่งมากพี่มาโกะของแม่

Marco and his 3-year-old-boy stories

Marco is talkative (like father like son ) and it is his story that makes ussmile or even laugh everyday. These are some examples.

- We were sitting in a car going to somewhere and it was 4 pm on a bright winterday. Suddenly we heard Marco from the backseat saying

Marco: "papa, mama..kijkt de zon gaat met Marco mee" (= Papa, mama, look the sun goes along with Marco) .

So, it was true as he saw the sun moving along whereever we drove to!!! Apparently, he doesn't know that our erath is part of the solar system!!

- Marco and Mama walked together to the supermarket and it was around 4 pm on a nice winterday. Marco enjoyed the walk and everything heppened around him. Then, he looked upon the sky and shouted

Marco: "Mama, de maan gaat mee" (= Mama, the moon goes along)

Mama knew this story from teh sun story above. no surprise here..but then when we turned around the corner Marco stopped and shouted again

Marco: "de maan wil niet mee. Hij gaat naar andere kant" (= the moon doesn't want to go along. he goes to the other way)

Mama, then, needed to look up and saw that when we turned to the left, the moon changed its position to be on the other side. So, Marco was right again!!!

- One day, Marco came back from the kindergarten and said to Mama directly.

Marco: Mama, jij bent moeder toch? (Mama, you are a mother, right?)

Mama: Ja. (=Yes)

Marco: En, baby Roy is een broertje, toch? (and baby Roy is a little brother, right?)

Mama: Ja.(=Yes and think that htey may teach him a family tree today) en Papa is een vader. (= and papa is a father)

Marco: Neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee (= Noooooooooooooooo)

Mama: !!!!!!!!!????!!!!!!!!!!

- Marco has a spiderman sweater. At first he didn't know who spiderman was but on day when he got back from the kindergarten. He discovered who spiderman was and told mama excitely.

Marco: Mama, weet je? Spiderman is een spin!! (Mama, you know what? Spiderman is an spider!!)

- Once Baby Roy threw a cookie on the floor. Marco ran to report that to Mama directly.

Marco: Mama, baby Roy is stout. Hij heeft koekje op de rond gegooid. moet je komen kijken.

(= mama, baby Roy is naughty. he threw cookie on the floor. you have to come and have a look)

Mama: OK.

Marco: Baby Roy moet naar de gang. Mama moet dat doen. (Baby Roy has to go to the walkway (=pinishment). Mama has to put him there).

Mama: hmm...(thinking what mama should do first)

but it seemed like it took too long to punish Baby Roy, so, Marco walked to baby Roy and pointed to him and introduced...

Marco: Mama, this is Baby Roy (just to make sure that Mama knew which one is Baby ROY!!)

Dictionary Roy-Thai, Thai-Roy and Roy – Dutch, Dutch - Roy

Our little Roy is very talkative. He is pretty fast in development especially his walking and talking ability. The doctor said that for his age, they expect only a baby who can stand and walk a bit along the table and can speak like 3 words that he knows the meaning such as papa, mama and daar (= there). But our little Roy, he can speak more than 10 words already!! (which a development of a child from 18 months at least). This development remind Mama of Marco who could speak only 9-10 words when he was 18 months and Papa and Mama were worried too much and went to the doctor. But it turns out that it is normal for a bilingual child (pheeewwww!!). The funny thing here is that for Marco, his very first words were Dutch as he heard more Dutch in his everyday life (mama speaks Thai to him but papa and mama speak Dutch to each other). But for Roy, he has heard Thai directly when he was born. We have Yai Yu, Yai Yao, P Nong and now again Yai yu in house. Mama speaks more Thai at home while Papa works hard and has only few hours per day to speak Dutch with the kids. The result is that Roy’s first words are Thai (and some Dutch words come later) while Marco’s Thai is also a lot better. It is also interesting to see when we first teach the boys new word, it is really depend on who teach first. If Mama was there, they learned it in Thai word and if Papa was there, they then learned it in Dutch version of that new word. The funny thing for Roy is that when we teached him two version at a time, he took the Thai version!!(in this case the word for horse, he took ‘maa’(ม้า) instead of ´paard´). Yeah yeah..the Thai identity prevails (in relations to mama’s thesis :D)

Due to Roy is going to the kindergarten next week, mama has to make a list of the codebook of Roy’s word for them to help with communication. Here is the dictionary Roy –Thai, Thai – Roy and Roy-Dutch, Dutch-Roy!!
